"Topical application of tincture of iodine (I) was found to be effective in blocking the thyroid uptake of orally administered 131I in humans. Abdominal skin application of tincture of I resulted in an approximately 82% reduction in the uptake of 131I by the thyroid gland. The effectiveness varied among individuals and may have depended on the quantity applied and on the application site. In each study group, elevated levels of serum I were observed."
"Serum I concentrations peaked at approximately 2 h after topical application of tincture of I. Subjects receiving 8 mL of tincture of I on the abdomen had 26-h (post-application) serum I levels ranging from 109 pg mm-3 (10.9 mcg dL-1) to 563 pg mm-3 (56.3 mcg dL-1), while thyroid uptakes ranged from 0.20% to 6.7%. Subjects receiving 4 mL tincture of I on the forearm had 26-h (post application serum I levels ranging from 30.1 pg mm-3 (3.0 mcg dL-1) to 70.6 pg mm-3 (7.1 mcg dL-1), while their thyroid uptakes ranged from 0.9% to 15.3%. The oral KI group had 26-h (post-administration) serum I levels ranging from 215 pg mm-3 (21.5 mcg dL-1) to 1010 pg mm-3 (101 mcg dL-1), with thyroid uptakes ranging from 0% to 0.61%. The increase in serum I concentration following topical application was found to be effective in reducing the thyroid uptake of radioiodine; however, large variations within groups were observed. The variation of serum I concentration in the tincture of I groups may be attributed to several factors, including subcutaneous fat, I binding to the skin and perspiration following tincture of I application. The results indicate that effectiveness of topical application of tincture of I is increased with the quantity applied and may be affected by the body location where it is applied."

"Topical application of povidone I solution in dogs has been found to be effective in producing significant elevations in serum iodide concentrations within 2 h after application. Among dogs treated with this preparation 2 h before oral administration of 131I, significant thyroid blocking persisted for at least 72 h.

"Radioisotopes of I pose an important health risk to man in nuclear accidents associated with electric power generation due to their uptake by the thyroid glands. Topical application of tincture of I or povidone-iodine to the skin of rats has been found to be as effective as oral administration of potassium iodide in blocking thyroid uptake of parenterally administered 131I. If the same effectiveness can be demonstrated in humans, this may be an attractive alternative method of mass protection from radioisotopes of I following nuclear accidents."
