"Bromine and chlorine were the most common toxic elements reportedly found in automobiles. These elements are found in the seats, armrests, door trim, shift knobs and other areas of the car. Think about it, you spend perhaps 2 hours a day in your car, with the windows rolled up and little air circulating. It is no wonder that I have seen many patients who feel that they can become ill from exposure to the air in a new car."
"Bromine and chlorine are members of the halide family which is a group of elements that includes iodine. If we are exposed to too much of one halide, it will cause our body to release other halides. My research has clearly shown that we are exposed to too much bromine and chlorine. These elements are found in many plastic products including computers. In addition, bromine is a fire retardant found in carpet, clothing, mattresses and many other consumer items. The consequence of this overexposure to toxic halides has been a depletion of iodine in our bodies. Clinically, the result of too much bromine and chlorine and not enough iodine are the high rates of thyroid disorders as well as cancer of the breast, ovary and prostate."
"Testing found Ann severely deficient in iodine (nearly zero levels) and toxic with bromine. Ann was detoxified from bromine with a combination of Vitamin C, unrefined salt and magnesium. I also had her do salt baths. She was also treated with iodine. As Ann’s bromine levels fell and her iodine levels elevated, she began to feel better. About 1.5 years after starting therapy, Ann felt that she had regained her health. In fact, her thyroid blood tests now returned to normal, without the use of thyroid hormone. "

In Iodine, Brownstein has a section devoted to lowering Bromine (pp 106-109). His program seems to have three components: (1) stop ingesting bromide containing food and medicine, (2) take iodine, (3) eat unrefined salt (NaCl).
"Due to the addition of bromide in many food and drug sources..., I believe that our bodies have bromide toxicity, which is further exacerbated by iodine deficiency. In order to improve one's endocrine and immune system, a practical way of helping the body detoxify from bromine must be found.
"There are simple ways of lowering the levels of bromine in the body. Primarily, we must stop ingesting bromide-containing food and medicines. That means eating organic food, grown without pesticides. Also, it means limiting bakery products that contain bromine.
"However, once bromide is absorbed, it binds tightly to the iodine receptors in the body. In addition, bromine can bind to the transport cells for iodine (sodium-iodide symporter--NIS) and damage the transporter cells. The oxidized form of bromide--bromine--is stored in the fat tissues. Taking iodine in physiologic doses can help to competitively inhibit the binding of bromine. Also, iodine supplementation allows the body to detoxify itself from bromine, while retaining iodine.
"Research has shown that bromide competes with iodide for absorption and uptake in the body. (reference) Dr. Guy Abraham, a researcher on iodine writes, "Therefore, increasing iodide intake should lower bromide levels in the thyroid preventing and reversing its thyrotoxic and goitrogenic effects." "The use of iodine will also cause bromine to be released from other tissues in the body in addition to the thyroid.
"Dr. Abraham showed that increasing the intake of iodine would additionally increase the urinary excretion of other toxic halides. (reference) In fact, Dr. Abraham has shown that iodine supplementation can result "in the whole body being detoxified" from the toxic elements bromide and fluoride. Research done in my office verified this statement from Dr. Abraham.
"Salt can also help with the removal of bromide. The chloride in salt is part of the halide family (iodide, chloride, fluoride and bromide). Chloride can competitively inhibit bromide and help the kidneys excrete bromide. (references) In fact, nearly 100 years ago, "salting the bromide out" was used in medicine to help lower bromine toxicity.
"A low-salt diet will exacerbate bromine toxicity. When rats are subjected to a low-salt diet, the half-life of bromine is prolonged 833% as compared to rats given a normal salt diet. (reference) Unrefined salt is an effective tool to help lower bromine levels in the body. "It is well known that the toxic halides, fluoride and bromide, having a similar structure as iodine, can competitively inhibit iodine absorption and binding in the body.
"A study was performed in my office to look at the iodine levels as well as the toxic halogen levels bromide and fluoride in 8 random patients. None of the patients had been treated with iodine before the study. The patients were studied at baseline to look not only at their iodine levels but also their bromide and fluoride levels....
"As can be seen from Table 1, little iodine was secreted at baseline. The data indicates that all of these patients were iodine deficient at baseline. After ingesting 50mg/day of an iodide/iodine supplement (Iodoral®), repeat testing was done on day 1 and after 30 days of supplementation. As iodine was supplemented, as expected, the excretion of iodine increased—from 40.2% to 66.15%. Increasing the iodine load also increased the excretion of the toxic halides bromide and fluoride."
