Iodine Chemistry

IODINE Chemistry

Iodine is a very complex element and has a large number of different forms and compounds.  Moreover, different forms have different effects in the body.

The study of the different forms and their effects is in its infancy.  So far, most of the research has been done on molecular iodine (I2)and iodide (I-).

Thrall's research is exciting because she attempts to discover what happens to molecular iodine vs. iodide when orally consumed in water.

Robinson attempts to discover whether iodine and iodide in water have different effects on the thyroid in humans.

Burgi looks at the toxicology of iodate.

Gottardi looks at various iodine compounds and develops the aqueous chemistry of iodine.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) provides a detailed discussion of the various states of the iodine atom.
