"Another approach to treating hypothyroidism is to use iodine (I). Thanks to the work of Dr. Guy Abraham (2004), and a new book largely based on Abraham’s research, by Dr. David Brownstein (2004), there is a growing awareness that many thyroid-related diseases and syndromes are due to a chronic deficiency of iodine. Dr. Abraham determined that the optimal daily Iodine (I) intake for humans is about 12.5 mg per day. This is just slightly less than the average daily intake in Japan—but is far higher than the 150 mcg that is generally recommended in this country. Dr. Abraham has used Lugol’s solution — a 5% solution of 50 mg iodine and 100 mg potassium iodide per milliliter — as an ideal form of iodine supplementation. Two drops of Lugol’s solution per day provides 5 mg of iodine, and 7.5 mg of potassium iodide, totaling 12.5 mg per day of iodine. Lugol’s solution is available from compounding pharmacies. An alternative to Lugol’s is a tableted form of Lugol’s called Iodoral®."
