IODINE AND CANCER
Iodine has been implicated in a variety of forms of cancer, including thyroid cancer, breast cancer, stomach cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer.
One of the most exciting new development is the use of NIS receptor gene transfer in cancer treatment. At first, it was developed for use with RAI (radioactive iodine). However, experiments have now been conducted using NIS receptor gene transfer with inorganic, nonradioactive iodine as the treatment modality. (See Zhang.)
Researchers have been investigating apoptosis, as well as other mechanisms that may be involved in cancer.
