Potassium iodide block of choroid plexus visualization in technetium brain scans.Fayen WJ. J Nucl Med. 1971 Feb;12(2):98.
"Visualization of the choroid plexus in 99m-Tc-pertechnetate brain scans may occasionally interfere with scan interpretation. Premedication with perchlorate will block choroid plexus uptake of pertechnetate. Because perchlorate is not FDA-approved for general use, an acceptable substitute was sought. Since April 1969 we have used potassium iodide with uniformly good results.
"It has been shown that Lugol's solution given 24 hr before the injection of sodium pertechnetate will only partially block choroid plexus uptake. We have routinely administered orally 10 drops of saturated solution of potassium iodide ½ - 4 hr before injection of sodium pertechnetate (excluding those patients with a history of iodine sensitivity) and have obtained uniformly good block of choroid plexus uptake. Figure 1 shows a typical example of our experience."
