IODINE

    Iodine Atom

How much iodine do we need? What are the best sources? What happens if we don't get enough? Or get too much?

The Iodine Group is gathering information on iodine in an attempt to understand how iodine affects the body and how iodine can best be used to support total body health.

One of the current controversies in the Iodine field is how much iodine is good for the human body.  Some people claim that the RDA is appropriate (about 150 mcg per day), while others claim that much larger amounts are needed and recommend orthoiodosupplementation.

Iodine is essential for the body and is detected in every organ and tissue.  It is found in high levels in the thyroid, breast, liver, lung, heart, and adrenals.  Iodine is essential in pregnancy.

There is increasing evidence that iodine is related to numerous diseases, including cancer.  Various clinicians and researchers have found iodine effective with hypothyroid and hyperthyroid conditions, goiter, fibrocystic breasts, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, brain fog, constipation, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation, and detoxification issues (mercury, perchlorate, fluoride, bromide).

This website also has a variety of  Special Topics related to iodine -- for example, Iodine in Food, Goitrogens, Related Nutrients, Iodine Physiology (including transporters, absorption, excretion, etc), Forms of Iodine, the Other Halogens (fluoride, bromide, and chloride), Iodine and the Environment, Iodine in Evolution, Iodine as an Antioxidant, Nuclear Issues, Iodine Maps, and Iodine as a Disinfectant.

There are also Overviews of iodine -- for example, links to various clinicians,  iodine uses,  and audio-visual presentations.
